| Abstract |
This study aims to examine the lived experience of persons with developmental disabilities using Open Door paratransit transportation services in Indianapolis, Indiana. Method: Thirteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with adults with developmental disabilities aged 27 to 60 years old (mean age of 45.5 years). The criterion sample was taken from the existing Open Door database. Interviews were tape-recorded, transcribed, and individually analyzed by each researcher. The researchers then conversed, debated, and ultimately came to a consensus on the main themes. Results: The main themes emerging from the interviews were: 1) the personal meaning of paratransit use and services, 2) a concrete outlook or perspective, and 3) challenges of paratransit services. Discussion: The personal meaning of paratransit services for those with developmental disabilities is a means of reaching a destination, but is also a means of social interaction and increased independence. The participants of this study viewed Open Door with a simplistic, concrete outlook illustrated by one to two word responses and viewing safety in the tangible form of seatbelt use. The challenges of service emerged through difficulty with bus drivers, physical spacing of buses, and the punctuality of the buses. Conclusion: By exploring the lived experience of riding paratransit services for those with developmental disabilities, the foundation has been laid for future research, advocacy, and improved occupational therapy intervention and discharge planning. |
