Nutrition and Dietetics

Welcome to the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics. Nutrition is the scientific study of food and the processes by which food components are digested, absorbed, and used by the body to nourish cells and tissues. A registered dietitian is an expert in food and nutrition. Dietitians give dietary advice, promote healthy eating habits, develop specific diets, and participate in nutrition research. In the United States, nutrition professionals include the registered dietitian (RD), and the dietetic technician, registered (DTR). Dietitians must pass a national exam before they may become registered dietitians.

By completing our dietetic internship program, you will be prepared for and eligible to sit for the RD exam, the first steps toward having a successful career in nutrition and dietetics.

  • Dr. Karyl Rickard Pediatric Nutrition Award

    • This endowed fund, established in 2013 by Professor Emerita Dr. Karyl Rickard, supports an annual monetary award for graduate students engaged in pediatric research or innovative leadership projects who demonstrate significant potential for contribution to pediatric nutrition and dietetics. 
    • Ms. Deb Abel, a 2012 graduate of the Ph.D. in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences program at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis is the 2016 Dr. Karyl Rickard Pediatric Nutrition Award winner. At Florida International University, she developed a Pediatric Nutrition Graduate Certificate Program that is fully online and available anywhere in the world.  See the press release about the 2016 Award HERE.
